When is a Day a Day

In recent days I have had friends ask me if a day in the Genesis telling of creation is truly a 24 hr. day. It seems that the argument going around today is that if we use the bible to interpret the Bible,
2 Peter 3:8 and Psalm 90:4 would indicate a day could be as long as 1 million years in Genesis.

Let's take a look at the word day in the story of Creation. We will start with the question of 2 Peter 3:8 and Psalm 90:4. I encourage you to read these verses in context.

When using scripture to interpret scripture the scriptures should be dealing with the same subject. Neither of these passages deals with creation.  Both are telling us to be patient because God's time is not our time

In both these text, the use of a simile compares a time on earth to God's perception of time. These verses are clearly using figurative language not defining a day.

Now let'stake a look at the meaning of the word Yom. Yom is the Hebrew word used for day in the Genesis account of creation. Yom can have five different meanings. 1) a period of light (Sun up to Sun down),  2) A period of 24 hrs., 3) a vague time (back in the day), 4) a point of time (the Day I was Born), 5) a year. Which meaning of Yom is intended is defined by the context of its usage.

The usage of a number with the word Yom(day) is very important. The combination of number and day occurs 357 times in the Bible outside of Genesis 1. In every one of those cases, it clearly meant a 24 hr day. Some of these verses you might want to look at are Genesis 30:36, Exodus 24:16, Ezra 3:6, and Leviticus 19:6.

In addition, the word Yom (day) is used 38 times in the Bible with the Hebrew words for morning and evening. A couple of examples of this are Exodus 16:8 and Exodus 18:13. In all 38 times, Yom had to mean a 24 hour day.

Exodus 20:11 makes it even clearer.

In Exodus 20 God ties the creation to our seven day week. We do not work for 6 million years and then rest for one million.

In my mind, there is no question that the days of creation were 24 hr. days. God used Moses to write Genesis. He chose very specific verbiage (And there was evening and there was morning, the first day) to indicate 24 hrs.  To me questioning if God could have created the world in 6 24hr days is questioning if God is all powerful.
